Time to Get Serious (Post 3)

Ok, so I didn't accomplish my goal of having a complete outline of the plot by this post, but failing is an option, according to 20 time. I have made some progress this week though. I've started a list of things that I want and don't want in the show. This list also includes ideas, and potiential songs or scenes . This is what is on the list right now:

What I want:
-Storyline: Tragic, Love, Drama, a little comedy
-Comedic relief character
-Court Room scene
-Soulful act break (Song that ends the first act)
- I Don’t want a reprise finale? (Many musicals end with a previous song being sung again to bring the show to an emotional end)
-narrator? (bert “mary poppins” leading player “pippin”)
Overall Message: Be careful who you trust/Watch your back (still questioning)

None of these ideas are set in stone yet. I just would love to have these ideas worked into the story somehow. I sort of have a plot in mind but it's really abstract at the moment. I wouldn't even call it a plot. It is kind of like mutiple ideas that seem like they go together, but when you look at it as a whole, they don't. I've been having a hard time coming up with plot ideas. I started asking my classmates, who are also writing stories, on how they came up with their ideas. They told me that they relied on material that they wrote in the past, and still have, to give them ideas. That made me remember that I have a song book with several songs written by me, and posts in my notes app about general ideas for songs and musicals. This is great! I have a lot of resources that I can look to now so that makes me happy. So this week I'm going to invest more time into this project because I feel like it could be something wonderful if I treat it as such instead of treating it like a hobby.

Goal: Finish the song that I started, create the main character.

Already Stuck......Great Start (Post 2)

Ok, I know its a little early in the project for this, but I'm already stuck. I don't know what to center the musical around. I've had problems with finding a central point to base a story around in the past, and I was hoping that this time the ideas would come to me but apparently that's not going to happen. Basing it off a book would be a good idea but I really want to do an original piece. On a high note, I've started writing some of the music for the show. That's pretty good. And they don't sound too bad either. I think I'm going to write the songs in a contemporary broadway style with a little bit of modern pop and soul mixed somewhere in there. If you know the show "Smash" think of that kind of music because I thought that their music was so beautiful. By my next blog, I want to have a basic outline of the plot with character descriptions. I was thinking maybe if I wrote some of the music first, I could build scenes on top of them and my story would just create itself. I guess I'll just have to find out!

1st Post!!

I'm really excited to start my 20 time project. Even though it kind of scares me, I feel like this will be a great experience and actually inspire me even more to continue doing this. I feel like if the project doesn't scare you, then you're not aiming high enough. For my project, I am going to be writing a musical. Most likely, I won't be completing an entire 2 1/2 hour musical that can be compared to the works of Wicked or West Side Story but hopefully it will be impressive for a high school sophomore. At the bare minimum I hope to have a few scenes with musical numbers to accompany them.
I'm glad that I've figured out my goal but I knew that wasn't going to be the tricky part. The tricky part is going to be figuring out and starting my game plan. My basic outline is to:

  • Read books about composing
  • Learn the structure of musicals
  • Develop a broad outline of the plot
  • Being creating the characters
  • Compose songs for a specific event or character
  • Write the scenes between the musical numbers
Pin pointing the steps right now just made me really excited for this project! So that's all I have for right now. Thanks for reading and stay tuned. My name is Jerome by the way!
